I bought a new car on 4/11, it's a 96 Chrysler Sebring Convertible. On 4/12, I went on my lunch break from work to go get a new set of custom wheels. I should add at this point that I am a Trained Motorcycle Technician with many years experience working on cars and motorcycles, including hundreds of tire changes/balances. I am not just an average everyday consumer in this situation. Anyways, I bought the wheels and a set of 4 tires, and I took them to do myself, I wanted them done right and with no scratches, and I wanted them balanced a certain way, using stick-on type wheel weights. On 4/13, I mounted/balanced the tires, cleaned and waxed the wheels, and installed them on my car. I had a small problem, however. The only valve stems I had were for Harley Davidson Mag wheels. They are stainless steel stems with a rubber seal. They fit okay, but one had a slow leak, so I decided to go to the Walmart close to my house and have the proper stems installed. I didn't want to drive all the way out to my shop on these valve stems, so against my better judgment, I just went to Walmart. I worked at the Tire and Lube at this particular Walmart years ago, and I knew some of the people that work there. I felt comfortable taking my car here. I called before I went to make sure they had stick-on weights, and I was informed that they did. Upon arriving at Walmart, I talked to the technician that was going to work on my car, and both my wife and I stressed that we only wanted stick-on weights used when they rebalanced the wheels. We were told this was not a problem. The work was done, and I took my car. Everything seemed fine. Well, this past Saturday, 4/23, being the first nice day we've had here since I got the car, I gave it a good detail after work. I got down on the floor and hand washed and waxed my wheels again. When I got down and started washing them, I found that they had in fact used hammer-on weights on the inside lip of all 4 wheels, and I also found multiple scratches all over the wheels, right around the valve stems and where the lug nuts go. This is absolutely unacceptable. The wheel weights, I guess, I could let slide as a mis-communication, but the scratches in the powder coat and the aluminum is just carelessness and I will not tolerate. I called Walmart, and talked to a manager, and he said to bring the car in so they could see it and they would have to file a claim with their insurance. When I got there, there was probably 8-10 people piling around my car trying to make excuses for what they did, trying to weasel out of responsibility. The technician who actually did the work was there, and he was being a first-class ***hole about it, making smart *** remarks and generally being an idiot, stomping around slamming doors, etc... They pulled my car into their garage, and asked me to come out and show them what I was seeing. I showed them the multiple scratches, and the manager took pictures. They then proceeded to take one of the wheels off to look at the weights, whatever good that would do them. With the wheel off, we found that the rim had a small dent along the bead on the inside lip, which was apparently some huge deal to the tech that originally did the work. He immediately started acting like because the lip had a dent, he was off the hook. We looked at the front wheel on the same side, and found that it was dented as well. Not terribly, I've seen/repaired far worse. Anyways, we started going over my information to make the claim, and the manager is telling me that since I installed the tires/wheels myself before I brought the car to them, and because 2 of the rims had small dents in them, that Walmart would likely not be held responsible for any of the damage that they caused. I installed the wheels and drove straight to Walmart. The wheels were brand new and in perfect condition when it was driven into their garage. Their work order makes no note of any damage either before or after the service. It did state that the ABS light was on Prior to Service, which has nothing to do with the damage in question. He was hesitant to even file the claim, and kept trying to talk me out of filing it, because they probably wouldn't do anything about it. I have an attorney I can contact, but I would rather just keep this out of court. As far as I'm concerned, right is right and wrong is wrong. I had no idea the wheels were dented, but that is not the point anyways. They damaged the wheels, and they need to be held liable for the damage they caused. Dents or no dents, they scratched the wheels and used wheel weights that damaged the finish, and they need to make it right. Am I wrong? Should Walmart get off the hook? car insurance. BMW . How to Negotiate a Bank RepoYour bank can take your vehicle if you miss even one car payment, the Federal Trade Commission warns. This is known as a repossession. It takes away your transportation and blemishes your credit reports. You may owe additional money because the lender may not be able to sell the car for enough money to cover your outstanding loan. Banks would prefer not to repossess, the American Financial Services Association explains, because it often results in a loss. You may be able to negotiate a repossession alternative with the bank. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Step by Step : 1 List repossession alternatives to discuss with the bank. You may just need a simple modification, like a change in payment due date to coincide with your paydays. You may need to skip one or two payments if you lost your job but have good prospects for another one. They can be added to the back end of your loan, extending the payback period by one or two months. You may be buried under late payment fees and need them to be waived so you can afford your regular payment. Lenders are often open to these solutions, Russ Heaps of Bankrate.com explains. 2 Call the bank and ask to speak to a loan officer or supervisor who has the authority to negotiate with you. Heaps recommends being proactive in calling as soon as you realize you are at risk of repossession, which typically happens when you have missed at least one payment. 3 Propose your preferred alternative to the loan officer or supervisor. He may agree or be willing to negotiate something similar. If not, propose the next idea on your list if you have one. Otherwise you can ask for his suggestions. Make it clear that you want to avoid repossession and are willing to work with him within the constraints of your current financial situation. 4 Ask for a copy of the agreement in writing once you have negotiated a solution to prevent repossession. The bank should be willing to provide this; if not, it is not obligated to follow through and could still end up repossessing the vehicle. Tips & Warnings Most people don't talk to the bank until repossession is looming, but Justin Leach of Toyota's financing arm recommends calling as soon as you realize you might have a problem. This can head off collection calls and repossession threats. If you cannot negotiate a solution to prevent a repossession, Lectric Law Library warns that you might be held liable for expenses related to a repo company taking the car. Prevent these costs by arranging for a voluntary repossession in which you turn in the car yourself rather than forcing the bank to send someone to retrieve it. ResourcesFTC: Vehicle Repossession
BMW . How to Change the Alternator in a Pontiac SunbirdThe Pontiac Sunbird was manufactured with an alternating generator system that uses either a single belt or serpentine belt system to spin a rotor within a stator, creating electricity for the car. Either system was designed to make replacement a relatively simple procedure, but the serpentine design is by far the easiest. The average backyard mechanic can replace the alternator in a Sunbird in about 30 minutes. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Socket set Screwdriver Crowbar (single-belt systems) Step by Step : 1 Disconnect the battery by turning the positive terminal bolt counterclockwise. Set the terminal wire aside so it's not touching the battery or metal. 2 Remove the belt from the alternator pulley wheel by pressing on the tension pulley arm and sliding the belt from underneath the idle pulley. Release the tension arm and the belt will have enough slack to be taken from the alternator pulley wheel. Single-belt systems require the alternator adjustment bolt be turned counterclockwise; then the belt will come off when the alternator's tension is relieved. 3 Remove the main lead wire from the rear of the alternator by turning the mount bolt counterclockwise. Place the wire away from the alternator. 4 Remove the mount bolts and nuts by turning them counterclockwise. The bolt heads can be held in place with a socket wrench, and the nuts can be removed. Pull the bolts straight out of the mount arms, and the alternator can be removed. 5 Replace the alternator by positioning it into the mount arms and sliding the bolts back into place. Turn the mount bolt nuts clockwise, leaving the adjustment bolts slightly loose if using a single-belt system. Wrap the belt around the alternator pulley wheel, push the tension pulley arm, slide the belt back under the idle pulley, then release the arm to get tension. Single belts require the belt be wrapped onto the pulley wheel, then the alternator needs to be pulled tightly to give the proper tension and the adjustment bolt turned clockwise to keep it tight. 6 Reattach the alternator main power lead and battery terminal by turning them clockwise. Tips & Warnings Never attempt this procedure without disconnecting the battery. Use extreme caution when working on a vehicle's electrical system. *hoist, raise it over your head, walk under it, and examine the lines as they lead from the hood area to each wheel. Leaks may be coming from holes in the lines, where the steel lines become rubber ones, or where the brake lines connect with the wheel cylinders. If you don't have access to a hoist at the auto repair shop at your local school or at a friendly garage, you have to jack up your car, one end at a time, and get down there with a flashlight or work light to look at your lines. Before you do so, check Chapter 1 for instructions and safety tips on jacking up your car! Do the following: 1. Check carefully along the lines for wetness and for streaks of dried fluid. 2. 824

This job isn't as scary as it sounds; in fact, it's quite simple — with two qualifications: First, don't fiddle with anything unless I tell you to! Second, be sure to disassemble the stuff that covers your brakes in the proper manner so that you won't have trouble reassembling it. For details on this foolproof technique, see the section in Chapter 1 called "How to Take Anything Apart — and Get It Back Together Again." Things not to do u/hen utorkinq on brakes Here are a couple of "nevers" to remember when working on your brakes. Doing any of these things can cause serious damage and huge headaches: * Never step on your brake pedal when you have the brake drum off your brakes. You can literally blow the brakes apart! The pistons can fly out of the ends of the wheel cylinders because the drum won't stop the brake shoes from moving outward. (If this makes no sense to you, go back and read about how wheel cylinders work in Chapter 10.) BMW . Where do you find a 40 amp fuse for your positive battery terminal?

Your owner's manual should tell you what the configuration is on your vehicle. Once you know, follow the instructions in the following section(s) that deal with the type(s) of brakes on your vehicle. When you check your brakes, check one of your front brakes first because the linings wear faster on the front brakes than on the rear ones. If the first set of brakes you look at seems to be in good condition, and if your car has been braking properly, there's probably no need to check on the other three. Just remember to check a different set the next time. However, if your brakes haven't been behaving properly, then go on checking each set until you find the culprit. Before you start to check your brakes, scan the instructions later in this chapter (including the section on checking and packing wheel bearings) to be sure that you have the necessary tools and products on hand. When your vehicle is on up jack stands with at least one wheel off, you don't want any last-minute surprises! If you're unfamiliar with the tools you need for the job, see Chapter 2 for descriptions.
